Bagamoyo is a city of about 30,000 on the Indian Ocean about 75 kilometers north of Dares-Salaam, Tanzania's capital. The city was founded at the end of the 18th century and is the oldest town in Tanzania. It quickly became one of the most important trading ports on the East African coast. It also served as headquarters for many renowned European explorers who explored the African interior and searched for the source of the Nile.
Today, Bagamoyo is a center for building dhow sailboats and home to the Bagamoyo College of the Arts, internationally famous for teaching traditional Tanzanian painting, sculpture, drama, dancing and drumming.
In 2000, Vallejo sent a $5,000 grant to help the city purchase educational and medical supplies.
